THE SWITCH

This is the case of a Finnish company which manufactures megawatt-class permanent magnet generators for wind turbines and marine drive trains and generators as well as for other systems using renewable energy. The company was formed in 2006 by bringing together three innovative engineering players and nowadays employs approx- imately 140 people in Finland and 60 people abroad. The main milestone in the company’s history was delivering the first-generation prototype for use in an offshore wind turbine development to the Norwegian company, ScanWind (now part of GE Wind Energy) in 2004. This was achieved thanks to collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, the strong determination of the founders and their valuable knowledge and expertise in the field, as well as by taking advantage of their “small and flexible” company status. This case describes the company’s journey in achieving its first major milestone that had a significant impact on the company’s future success and multiplied its turnover fivefold in one year.
